Internationalization

Since the dawn of the computing age a unique challenge has presented itself at each stage of the industries development. How do you write and maintain one set of source code or documentation that can easily be recreated in other languages? Technologies have come and gone but the essential problem remains - how can I support all the languages my customers speak without writing a new version for each one?

The 'art' of achieving this (and believe us, it is an art) is called Internationalization, more commonly written as I18N (Learn More...). Wikipedia defines I18N as "...the process of designing a software application so that it can be adapted to various languages and regions without engineering changes." What this should mean in practice is 1 binary application whose operations should not change irrespective of the display language of the user interface of that application. A language resource kit containing all the applications user interface menus, dialog items and message strings is created and translated into the desired target languages. This process applies equally to cloud applications, websites or mobile devices.

Internationalization is as much a business process as it is a technical one. Avantix consultants have on average over 20 years implementation experience in internationalization projects and most recently added bi-directional support for Arabic to a major content management system.
